# Build a model from a drawing

> Reconstruct an editable part from dimensioned views while keeping uncertain geometry explicit.

Attach a drawing and ask Adam to reconstruct the part in your chosen CAD application. This works best when the views, dimensions, and sections define the geometry clearly. Missing information should become a question or labeled assumption.

## Prepare the source

Use the clearest PDF or image available, including all sheets and section views. Identify units, revision, projection convention, and the target CAD application. If you have DXF or DWG files, ask Adam to check whether the available tools can read their entities; a readable PDF can provide additional reference.

## Reconstruct in stages

**1. Read the drawing**

Ask for a feature inventory and a list of dimensions that define each feature. Resolve conflicting or unreadable callouts.

**2. Plan the model**

Choose a base feature and a sequence of sketches, extrusions, cuts, and patterns appropriate to the part. Identify which values should become parameters.

**3. Build and compare**

Create the model, then check measured dimensions against the source. Compare orthogonal and section views where relevant.

**4. Deliver the reconstruction**

Request the editable source, exchange format, dimension comparison, and unresolved assumptions.

```text title="Reconstruct a stepped spacer" wrap theme={null}
Reconstruct the stepped spacer in this drawing in [CAD application], using millimeters. First list the diameters, axial lengths, bore, and edge features with their source callouts. Ask about missing values that determine the shape. Build a parameterized model, then compare each stated dimension with the finished geometry. Return the native model, STEP, and a dimension-check table.
```

## Handle incomplete information

Do not use a printed view's apparent size as an exact dimension unless the scale and measurement method are established. A scan can be distorted, and an isometric view can hide depth or internal details.

```text title="Resolve an ambiguous feature" wrap theme={null}
The bore termination is unclear in this drawing. Show which views or callouts support a through-hole or a blind hole, and identify the missing dimension. Pause that feature until I confirm its geometry.
```

A reconstruction may match the supplied dimensions without proving the original design intent. Keep assumptions with the model and use [drawing review](https://docs.adam.new/cad/drawing-review.md) before producing a new manufacturing drawing.
