# Create engineering drawings

> Turn a CAD model into a drawing with a deliberate view and dimension plan.

Give Adam the source model and the information a fabricator or inspector needs. Drawing creation depends on the CAD application and available tools; Onshape and SOLIDWORKS have dedicated drawing workflows. For other applications or attached files, ask Adam to confirm the authoring and export path first.

Working from an uploaded STEP file? Ask for a dimensioned PDF and its generation source. If you need a native drawing document, specify the connected CAD application and have Adam confirm that it can author the required views and annotations there.

## Prepare the inputs

Provide the part or assembly and configuration, sheet template if you use one, units, projection convention, and required output formats. Include the material, finish, drawing number, revision, and tolerance policy where known.

Geometry defines nominal shape. Functional fits, threads, surface finishes, and tolerance requirements need supplied engineering intent.

## Work through a drawing

**1. Plan the views and dimensions**

Ask Adam to inventory the features and propose views that describe them clearly. Include sections or details for internal or crowded geometry.

**2. Create the drawing**

Use the agreed sheet, template, projection convention, and scale. Add dimensions tied to the model where supported.

**3. Check coverage and layout**

Compare the sheet against the model feature by feature. Check dimension values, references, notes, and readability.

**4. Deliver the editable drawing and PDF**

Export after the final changes and inspect every sheet. Retain a list of missing inputs or unresolved annotations.

```text title="Draft a drawing of a mounting plate" wrap theme={null}
Create a drawing for the active mounting plate, configuration [name], using our attached template. Use millimeters and the template's stated projection convention. First propose the views and a dimension plan covering the envelope, thickness, hole sizes, and hole locations. Apply the tolerance policy in the attached brief. Leave missing material or finish requirements unresolved. Create the native drawing and PDF, check each sheet for overlaps, and report any undimensioned features.
```

## Refine a specific area

```text title="Make a crowded detail readable" wrap theme={null}
The slot dimensions on sheet 1 are crowded. Add an appropriate detail view, move the relevant annotations to it, and keep their model references intact. Check the displayed values and units after the edit, then export a fresh PDF.
```

## Review the deliverable

| Check | Evidence to inspect |
| - | - |
| Source identity | Correct part, configuration, and revision |
| Feature coverage | Every required feature has an unambiguous size and location |
| Dimension meaning | Measured values, units, tolerances, and model attachments agree |
| Notes and metadata | Supplied material, finish, revision, and drawing number are present |
| Layout | Readable views and annotations on every exported sheet |
| Open issues | Missing intent and unsupported annotations are listed explicitly |
