# Create and change CAD models

> Describe a part or modification, preserve design intent, and verify the resulting geometry.

Ask Adam to build a part from requirements or change an existing model. Use a [CAD connection](https://docs.adam.new/supported-software.md) when the result needs to live in your application, or specify the source and exchange formats you want from an attached-file task.

## Before you start

Name the application and document, confirm the units, and describe the function. For an edit, identify the configuration and the dimensions, mounting points, or mating faces that must stay fixed.

A parametric part, an imported solid, and a mesh offer different editing options. Ask Adam to inspect the source before choosing how to modify it.

## Create a part

```text title="Create a parametric sensor mount" wrap theme={null}
In [CAD application], create a sensor mounting plate in millimeters: 76 mm long, 38 mm wide, and 5 mm thick. Add two 6.5 mm through-holes centered across the width, each 12 mm from its nearest short edge. Name the length, width, thickness, hole diameter, and end offset parameters. Keep the sketches constrained. Save the editable model and a STEP export, then report the measured envelope and hole-center spacing.
```

This request defines measurable geometry. Add material, load, manufacturing, and clearance requirements when the part has to satisfy them.

For this example, check the finished part against these measurements from the brief:

| Check | Expected value |
| - | - |
| Envelope | 76 × 38 × 5 mm |
| Through-holes | Two, each 6.5 mm in diameter |
| Hole-center spacing | 52 mm, calculated as 76 − 12 − 12 |
| Hole-center location across the width | 19 mm from either long edge |

Open the STEP export as well as the native document. If it contains only a mesh or the wrong configuration, ask Adam to correct the export before continuing.

## Change an existing part

**1. Inspect the starting point**

Confirm the intended document and configuration. Check the existing feature tree, geometry, and rebuild state.

**2. Describe the change and protected geometry**

Reference a feature, dimension, selection, or mating surface. State the intended value and unit.

**3. Rebuild and inspect**

Ask Adam to read back changed dimensions, inspect affected neighbors, and report new warnings or failures.

**4. Save the result**

Specify the destination and export format. Keep a recoverable source revision when comparing alternatives.

```text title="Change one parameter while preserving the interface" wrap theme={null}
In the open mounting plate, increase thickness from 5 mm to 7 mm. Preserve the bottom mounting face, outline, hole diameters, and hole-center locations. Update the thickness parameter where the model supports it, rebuild, and verify those protected dimensions. Save a new revision and return the native model plus STEP.
```

## What to review

Check the requested dimensions, number of bodies, hole and slot locations, and rebuild warnings. For an assembly, also check component positions and mating relationships. A screenshot helps explain the change; measurements establish whether it matches the request.

STEP can exchange solid geometry but generally does not preserve the original feature history. If you need editable sketches and features, request and inspect the native document as well.
