# Interpret and compare simulation results

> Connect plots and numbers to their source study, numerical checks, and engineering requirements.

When results already exist, ask Adam to inspect them before rebuilding or rerunning the study. Include the setup and logs alongside the result files so the numbers can be interpreted in context.

## Read a result with its provenance

Provide the source revision, solver and version, material and boundary data, mesh, achieved step or time, and output definitions. A plot without its units, component, or deformation scale can be misleading.

```text title="Review a structural result package" wrap theme={null}
Review the attached study and results. Identify the geometry revision, load case, solver completion, and achieved step. Report displacement at [location] and stress in [region], including units, component, and averaging convention. Inspect reactions and mesh sensitivity where the files support those checks. Separate observations from assumptions and list evidence needed before comparing with our requirement.
```

## Separate three conclusions

| Question | Evidence |
| - | - |
| Did the run finish? | Solver termination, exit status, achieved load or time, and diagnostics |
| Is the numerical result credible for this question? | Balance checks, finite values, refinement, and reference comparisons where appropriate |
| Does the design meet the requirement? | The relevant quantity compared with a supplied acceptance limit under justified assumptions |

A missing check should remain visible. Incomplete or unconverged results can help diagnose a problem but should not be presented as an accepted design result.

## Compare like with like

Use the same physical inputs, measurement locations, field components, and averaging conventions. Explain any change in the model or numerical method. Keep color ranges consistent when comparing contour plots.

```text title="Make a revision comparison table" wrap theme={null}
Compare these two result packages at the same operating conditions. Create a table with geometry revision, mesh size, solve status, measured [quantity], balance or equilibrium checks, and refinement evidence. Identify differences in inputs that prevent a fair comparison. Recommend further work only where the evidence supports it.
```

## Open and retain the deliverables

Adam opens supported `.sim.json` exports in its simulation viewer. Ask Adam to generate that export from the solved data when conversion is available, then open it from the task's files. A native solver database does not automatically become a viewer file. Keep the raw solver outputs and native study as well.

| Control | Use it to |
| - | - |
| Result field buttons | Select an exported field and read its units from the legend |
| **Mesh** | Show the displayed surface mesh edges |
| **Deformed shape** | Compare an exported displacement field with the original outline; check the scale multiplier |
| **Design** and **Compare** | Switch between cases and compare exported summary metrics when the file has multiple cases |
| **Same scale for all designs** | Keep a shared color range for comparable fields across designs |
| **Setup** | Read exported conditions, notes, and **Result provenance** |

The deformation control changes the display only; reported values remain unscaled. Controls depend on what the file contains. Setup text and comparison metrics describe the export; opening it does not independently verify the underlying solve.

For each plot, identify the field, units, region, step or time, and display scale. The simulation viewer displays an exported surface. For an interior slice, a time history, or a numerical probe, ask Adam to produce a separate plot or table from the source result data.

If the file shows **This simulation result could not be opened**, ask Adam to check and regenerate the viewer export while preserving the solver files. Renaming an arbitrary JSON file to `.sim.json` does not convert it.
