# Set up an engineering study

> Translate the physical test into documented materials, contacts, loads, and boundary conditions.

A study starts with a physical model. Give Adam enough information to distinguish what is known from what needs to be assumed, then request a setup summary before a costly solve.

## Bring the analysis brief

| Input | What to specify |
| - | - |
| Geometry | File or native document, revision, configuration, and units |
| Physics | Structural, fluid, thermal, steady, transient, linear, or nonlinear behavior as appropriate |
| Materials | Property values, units, conditions, and sources |
| Boundaries | Physical supports, contacts, loads, flow conditions, or heat transfer |
| Outputs | Exact quantity, location, component, and units |
| Acceptance | The supplied limit or comparison that determines a useful result |
| Budget | Available run time and how much refinement or iteration to attempt |

A material name alone may not establish temperature-dependent properties or a constitutive model. A picture of a fixture may not show its actual compliance. Identify these gaps before treating the setup as complete.

## Translate a test protocol

```text title="Turn a test brief into a setup plan" wrap theme={null}
Use the attached test protocol to prepare a study for [model], revision [revision], in [solver]. Extract the material properties, load cases, fixture conditions, and acceptance limits with their document locations. Map each load and support to the model and explain the idealization. Report unresolved inputs. Show the setup summary and estimated run scope before solving.
```

## Inspect the applied setup

For each region, request its name and measured location or extent. Verify load directions and total magnitudes, coordinate systems, contact behavior, and the consistency of units.

```text title="Check the applied boundary conditions" wrap theme={null}
Inspect the prepared study without solving. Show the bodies and material assignments, support and load regions, coordinate systems, and total applied force and moment where available. Compare them with the brief. List missing assignments, conflicting constraints, and any setting that could not be read back.
```

## Keep setup and execution distinct

Request the native study or input files with the setup summary. If the solver or required license is unavailable, Adam can still prepare inputs or review the model, but the deliverable should say that no solve occurred.
