# Adam plug-in for ChatGPT and Codex

> Use the private preview plug-in to browse Adam work, continue a task, and inspect CAD files in a compatible host.

The Adam plug-in packages the Adam MCP connection with setup and engineering workflow skills for ChatGPT and Codex. In a compatible host, it adds entry points for Adam's project and task browser and a read-only CAD attachment viewer.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The packaged Adam plug-in is a private preview. Contact [hello@adam.new](mailto:hello@adam.new) for access and installation instructions for your client. You can connect to the [hosted MCP server](https://docs.adam.new/mcp/connect.md) without this package. A custom MCP connection does not install the package's bundled skills.

## Connect the preview package

**1. Install the package supplied by Adam**

Follow the installation instructions supplied with the preview for your host and version. The workspace browser and file entry points require compatible plug-in and MCP Apps support; their availability varies by client.

**2. Authenticate the Adam connection**

Use the host's Adam connection flow to sign in, select the intended workspace, and review permissions. Use the sign-in screen for credentials, not the conversation.

**3. Verify access without starting work**

Ask the client to check the connected workspace and list existing work where permitted. Setup does not require creating a task or running a CAD operation.

```text title="Open existing Adam work" wrap theme={null}
Check which Adam workspace is connected, then open my projects and tasks. Show existing work only. Do not create a new task or start an Adam agent.
```

## Browse and continue a task

Open Adam from the host's app navigation where available, or ask to open your Adam projects and tasks. Select a task to inspect its conversation and files. Project browsing requires project read access; task and file access have their own permissions.

The task you select supplies context to the client. The plug-in's composer sends your request to that client so it can continue using Adam's tools. To delegate the next turn to Adam's agent, say so explicitly. Both paths can continue the same task, and execution can consume Adam usage. See [the two execution modes](https://docs.adam.new/mcp/overview.md#choose-how-work-runs).

Attach input files through the host conversation. The plug-in panel's composer does not accept attachments directly. If the work needs a file inside Adam, ask the client to upload and attach it to the intended task.

## Preview a CAD attachment

In hosts that expose the file-viewer entry point, open a supported attachment with Adam's 3D model viewer.

| File source | Supported preview formats | Behavior |
| - | - | - |
| Attachment supplied by the host | STL, STEP/STP, IGES/IGS, 3MF, up to 32 MiB | Read-only preview. Opening it does not upload it to Adam or modify the file. |
| File already stored in Adam | STEP, STL, IGES, 3MF, and self-contained GLB/GLTF | Open from the task or ask to show the model, using the connection's file access. |

GLB and GLTF are not supported by the host-attachment entry point. Ordinary documents, images, text, and code use the host's native preview. If you want Adam to edit or analyze an attachment, specify the task and request that work separately from opening its preview.

## Connect your CAD application

The plug-in connects your AI client to Adam. Working in an existing SOLIDWORKS, NX, Inventor, CATIA V5, Solid Edge, Rhino, Fusion, or Onshape model also requires the corresponding [CAD connection](https://docs.adam.new/supported-software.md).

The directory submission candidate uses a dedicated `/mcp/chatgpt` connection with individually exposed file-based CAD tools. File-based modeling can run without a desktop CAD connection. Work inside a connected native CAD application requires an explicit request to delegate to Adam. The manually configured `/mcp` connection retains its existing direct-tool interface. The package remains a private preview until review and publication are complete.

## Troubleshooting

* **No Adam panel or file-viewer entry:** check host support and the preview installation instructions. A working MCP connection alone does not guarantee every plug-in interface is available.
* **Projects, tasks, or files are missing:** check the selected workspace and the relevant read permissions. Workspace administrators can restrict API/MCP access.
* **Opening a local file did not add it to Adam:** previewing is read-only. Ask to upload and attach the file when your task needs it.
* **Tools are listed but cannot run:** check [direct execution permissions and requirements](https://docs.adam.new/mcp/direct-tools.md#before-you-begin), native application readiness, and available Adam usage.

For sign-in, workspace selection, and revocation, use [MCP connection troubleshooting](https://docs.adam.new/mcp/connect.md#troubleshooting).
